In the name of energy efficiency, fluorescent lights have flooded the global South. In some parts of the Third World, fluorescent lights became understood as a status symbol. Nowhere on Park Avenue do you find fluorescent lights. They destroy the natural beauty of life. But in the “advanced societies,” though outside of the kitchen people generally don’t have fluorescent lights in their homes, they are universal in the workplace, in the factory, the prison, the asylum, the mall, the hospital, the law court, the school, the airport. They play a critical part in the de-education of the senses, to the benefit of political and economic power.
